About Gull Cottage
Gull Cottage on Hood Canal is built on the site of an old timber railway. In the early 1900’s a steam locomotive brought timber from inland across the site and out to the end of an old pier. The pilings from the old pier still remain.
As the timber business declined, the popularity of this area grew amongst sports fishermen. The salmon fishing in particular was good, but you could also catch Ling Cod, sea run Cutthroat trout, and rockfish. The crab, shrimp, clams, mussels, and oysters were plentiful as well. To accommodate the sportsman a resort was established approximately 1200 ft south of the cottage. The resort became popular with families as the swimming and boating (in addition to the fishing) became reasons to spend time in this beautiful environment.
In the mid 1960’s the resort closed. Many families (including the one I grew-up in) who’d spend several summers at the resort were saddened by the closure. To ensure future summers could be spent at the canal my parents purchased a one-room cabin, and this became the core of Gull Cottage.
Over a period of 20 years the cabin was expanded in a patch work of additions. In the mid 1980’s a carpenter was hired to turn the cabin into home. Nine months later, the interior of home was completed to approximately the state it is in now.
In the early 2000’s my parents passed away and my wife and I bought the property. At that time the exterior of home needed some work. We had it re-trimmed, painted, the roofing replaced and new gutters installed. Interior trim work was finshed, and a new heating air conditioning system installed. A hot tub was added, and the yards were fenced to help contain children and pets.
Today we’re happy to share this great home in this great area with those who want a peaceful getaway close to their big city environment. If you are considering a vacation stay at the home we now refer to as “Gull Cottage” and you have any questions about the cottage, the area, rates or reservations please don’t hesitate to contact us.
We wish you great times and great memories.
